Course Objectives

This course is intended to develop English proficiency in the field of the academic communication in the sciences and medicine, with special attention devoted to professional usage. Classes will be used to develop and practice strategies which will enable students to read, understand, discuss and communicate academic information effectively and efficiently. On completion, students should feel more comfortable and confident in expressing themselves in English, particularly in academic settings. This increased comfort and confidence should extend to one-to-one conversations, lecture presentations, professional (peer) presentations, professional emailing, and E-Learning presentations. Additionally, it is hoped that, on completion, each student will feel that they have a broader and more complete knowledge of some of the new technologies which can be used to communicate in English; ranging from traditional chalk and board presentations, intended for small groups, all the way to global communication through mediums such as YouTube and web pages.

Course Methods

Through both revolutionary and evolutionary advancements in technology, academic communication has morphed and now takes a variety of different forms. In recognition of this, the course seeks to integrate the use of different communication mediums as part of the overall academic communication process. The pros and cons of each medium, as they relate to academic communication, will be explored as part of the course.

The class involves each student selecting a topic that they will develop and use as the vehicle for improving their academic presentation skills over the course of the semester. Classes will consist of regular student presentations. Colloquial communications skills will be practiced during group discussion and critiques of class presentations. After each class, and as part of preparation for the next class, students will modify their existing presentations based on class discussions and critiques. Presentations will also be modified in an attempt to incorporate new technologies and presentation objectives mentioned in the "Course Objectives" section. Part of each class will be devoted to instruction and proper utilization of new techniques, which students can use as they continually develop their presentation and communication skills.

All students are welcome and encouraged to be creative and explore communication techniques that go beyond the limits of those covered in class.

Another theme that will be explored in the course is how to optimize communication skills based on the intended audience. Students will make slight changes in their presentation topic in an effort to learn how to tailor their presentations and communication skills towards particular audiences.

Prerequisite skills

? Intermediate level English or above

? Beginners knowledge of PowerPoint

? Strong desire to be creative in developing and presenting academic content
