The course introduces the Philosophy of existence with connections to medicine. Several philosophers of existence will be explained, read and discussed. The course is only for virtual mobility, taught via MS Teams. Students can be from all fields of study (studying medicine is not a prerequisite).

The main goal is to introduce into the core issues of the philosophy of existence.

Following thinkers will be analyze: S. Kierkegaard, J.-P. Sartre, Albert Camus, Gabriel Marcel, Maurice Merleau Ponty, Emmanuel Lévinas, Paul Ricoeur.

The main outcomes of the course:

  • Understanding of  the main issues of the philosophy of existence
  • Knowing the first mentions of the philosophy of existence (S. Kierkegaard, J.-P. Sartre)
  • Understanding of relationship to „the other“ in the philosophy of existence I (Albert Camus, Gabriel Marcel, Emmanuel Lévinas, Paul Ricoeur)
  • Understanding the importance of the topic of body and corporeality in the philosophy of existence (Maurice Merleau Ponty)

Minimal requirements, prerequisites, and conditions for selection and enrolment of students: Students can use MS Teams for video meetings (camera+microphone). Minimum English level B1:  "Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken.  Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest.
