Annotation: The course is designed as an introduction into the language of medicine, showing the origins of the medical terms, its language analysis and grammatical structures (Latin as well as Greek). Such an understanding of the specialised terminology is essential for its correct lexical and grammatical usage.

Medical Terminology ? LATIN

Objective:

Students will familiarize themselves with the structure of the Latin and Greek medical terminology, they will learn to analyse the terms from the grammatical, morphological, and even etymological points of view and to use them functionally. They will further develop their knowledge through understanding the terms in the broader context of the language and the content.

Winter semester:

Pass of three partial tests (of four) during the semester (70% pass), plus presence at the practical classes (maximum of three absences per 1 semester) - in that case students are awarded a credit;

if they do not meet the requirements  (pass of three tests and presence at the course), they have to write the credit test (70% pass).
There are 2 possible re-sittings for the credit test.

COURSE SYLLABUS:

Winter Term:

The development of medical terminology from a historical context; methods of study; program of the course.
Basic Latin grammatical terminology. Latin word categories. Word forms. Flexion. Pronunciation and intonation.
Declension of Latin nouns and adjectives: 1st declension. Prepositions used with the accusative and the ablative case. Vocabulary - basic rules.
Declension of Latin nouns and adjectives: 2nd declension. Ordinal numbers. The structure of an anatomical term.
Declension of Latin nouns and adjectives: 4th declension. 
Declension of Latin nouns and adjectives: 5th declension. Substantivization of adjectives.

Declension of Latin nouns: 3rd declension - imparisyllaba (dolor - operatio - caput).

Declension of Latin nouns: 3rd declension - parisyllaba (pelvis) and exceptions to the 3rd declension rules.
Diagnostic procedures and surgical interventions in MT.
Greek nouns in the Latin declension (3rd declension): ureter - basis - trauma; terminological classification of illness: -itis, -osis, -oma. Diagnosis clinica.
Greek nouns in the Latin declension (1st and 2nd declension): systole - diabetes - bronchos ? kranion.
Revision of the 1st-5th declension Latin nouns, Greek 1st-3rd declension and adjectives A type.
