The very specific problems of contemporary medical ethics are dealt with in this course, with special attention to both of ends of human life. The speciality of this course is the fact that conferences are tought by experts specialized on a different types of ethical dilemmas in medicine, from assisted reproduction to problems concerning advance directives and euthanasia. There are courses concerning not only ethics, but also economy and law. The seminars are lead likewise by the physicians from different clinics and departments, for example hematooncology, burns medicine, psychiatry etc. and general practicioners as well. We are honoured to say, that the form and content of this course is extraordinarily attractive for our medical students and highly estimated by them as well.

V kursu jsou probírány konkrétní problémy současné lékařské etiky, pozornost je věnována zejména oběma koncům lidského života. Zvláštností kursu je fakt, že základní konference mají experti specializovaní na různé typy medicínských problémů, od asistované reprodukce, porodnictví až po problémy spojené s advance directives a eutanázií. Pozoronost je ovšem rovněž věnovaná chybám ve zdravotnictví, rozdělování financí a finančním tokům ve zdravotnictví a právním otázkám. Jednotlivé semináře vedou rovněž odborníci různých pracovišť, např. popáleninové medicíny, hematoonkologie, psychiatrie, práva a řady dalších. Semináře vedou i praktičtí lékaři i externisté. Zkušenost ukazuje, ža zvolená forma výuky je pro studenty mimořádně atraktivní a že jak forma, tak i obsah kursu je studenty velmi dobře přijímán i hodnocen.

The aim of this course is to give informations about very particular ethical dilemmas of contemporary medicine. Our medical students, as future physicians, will be met with these dilemmas in their professional careers. The ethical problems and dilemmas will be subsequently discussed in the seminars. The course is based on knowledge of the first and the second year of medical studies.

V přednáškách vedených přednosty klinik či experty v daných oborech se posluchači seznámí s konkrétními velmi specifickými problémy, které současné zdravotnictví v České republice přináší. Jedná se přitom o problémy a situace, se kterými se medici ve své budoucí praxi setkají. V seminářích jsou pak jednotlivé kazuistiky či problematické okruhy v diskursu dále řešeny či rozebírány. Předmět staví na obecně filosofických základech lékařské etiky z ročníku prvého a ze seznámení se s problematickými okruhy lékařské etiky ročníku druhého.

There are four lectures and eight seminaries in this semester. The topics of the lectures are as follows:
1. Informed Consent. The Principle of Autonomy. Paternalism and Partnership. The Rights of the Patients, the Duty of the Physicians.
2. Death and philosophical thinking. Criteria of Death. Organ Donation for Transplantation: opting in, opting out, required request and routine salvaging.
3. Ethics and AIDS. Contemporary situation in the U.S.A., sub-saharan Africa and in the Czech rep. The switch from opting-in to opting-out.
4. Ethical Questions concerning infectious diseases and epidemiology.
The Topics of the seminaries are these:
1. The Human Body - shift of perception of the human body (anatomy and art). Human Body - experience of the corporeity; nakedness and deformity.
2. Pain and Suffering. The Search of Meaningness.
3. Death and Dying. Mortal Body; Images of Finality and Demise in the Art. The Search of Infiniteness.
4. The Spirituality of the Dying Patients. The Care of the Elderly Patients. Intensive Care and the End of the Human Life.
5. Hospice Movement. Palliative Care. Patient as a Bio-Psycho-Socio-Spiritual Being.
6. Advance Directives, living will, Health care proxy. DNR. Substitute decision making, Best interest. Dysthanasia. Patient in the PVS, "killing" and "letting die".
7. Communication with the Patient: truth communication, especially to the Patients with Cancer. The Trust between the Physician and the Patient. Which kind of Informations a patient can (should, must) know?
8. Medical Futility. The Shift form the Curative to the Palliative Care. Quantitative and the Qualitative Futility. The "good" of the Physician and the "good" of the Patient.

V letním semestru třetího ročníku jsou plánovány čtyři přednášky a osm seminářů. Témata přednášek jsou tyto:
1. Informovaný souhlas. Princip autonomie. Paternalismus a partnerství. Práva pacientů, odpovědnost lékařů.
2. Smrt a filosofické myšlení. Kritéria smrti. Odběr orgánů mrtvým za účelem transplantace, opting-out, opting-in, required request a routine salvaging.
3. Etika a AIDS. Současná situace v USA, subsaharské Africe a v ČR. Přechod z opting-in na opting-out.
4. Etické otázky týkající se infekčního onemocnění a epidemiologie.
Témata seminářů jsou tato:
1. Lidské tělo - proměny vnímání lidského těla (anatomie a výtvarné umění). Lidské tělo - prožívání vlastní tělesnosti; nahota a znetvoření
2. Bolest, utrpení. Hledání smyslu.
3. Smrt a umírání. Smrtelné tělo; obrazy konečnosti a zániku v kultuře. Hledání nekonečnosti.
4. Spiritualita umírajících pacientů. Péče o staré nemocné. Intenzivní péče a konec života.
5. Problematika hospicového hnutí. Paliativní medicína. Pacient jako bio-psycho-socio-spirituální bytost.
6. Advance Directives, living will, Health care proxy. DNR. Substitute decision making, Best interest. Problematika dysthanázie. Pacient v PVS, "killing" a "letting die
7. Sdělování pravdy (zvl. onkologickým pacientům). "Desatero zásad" při sdělování onkologické diagnózy. Důvěra mezi lékařem a pacientem. Co všechno nemocný musí (smí, má) vědět?
8. Zbytečnost léčby. Futilní léčba. Přechod z léčby kurativní na léčbu paliativní. Řádné a mimořádné prostředky (patřičné a nepatřičné). Dobro lékaře a dobro pacienta.
