The main task during the 5th year is to get the systematic knowledge. In the seminars, held by senior teachers, professors, the nosologic entities adn serious diseases are discussed. In practical training, held by associated professors and assistants, the demonstration of the patients with the aid to get skills in taking anamnesis, physical examination of the patient, interpretation of laboratory and other auxiliary findings. The studets are obliged to take part at reception of the patients and assist by some of the invasive procedures.

In the academic year of 2012/2013 study of internal medicine shall be conducted in the following manner:

1. SEMINARS

                                                      (the seminar is in English but is also open to those who study in Czech).

Students shall enrol for individual seminar teachers in the electronic enrolment system. Attendance is not checked at these seminars. The schedule will be posted up on the notice board of the Department of Internal Disciplines in Pavilion S during the first week of teaching.

Students are also invited to attend the Great Seminars of Internal Disciplines, which take place in the Syllaba Auditorium in the building of the Third Faculty of Medicine of Charles University twice a month on Thursday from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. The seminars cover major topics of internal medicine in a clear manner and represent the basic postgraduate study of young internists.

Those who are interested may also attend branch seminars of individual working groups, e.g. of the Metabolic Group of the Second Department of Internal Medicine and of the Centre for Diabetes, Metabolism and Nutrition Research, seminars of the Third Department of Internal Medicine - Cardiology and others.

A detailed programme of both great seminars and seminars of working groups is usually posted up on the notice boards of medical departments and on the faculty webpage.

2. CLINICAL INTERNSHIP

Internships at the clinical department including a patient analysis or internships professionally focused on an internal medicine subdiscipline including a patient analysis. Internships take place at the First Department of Internal medicine, Second Department of Internal Medicine, Third Department of Internal Medicine - Cardiology, First Department Internal Medicine - Haematology of the University Hospital of Královské Vinohrady, and with selected assistants and senior lecturers at Na Homolce Hospital, Na Františku Hospital and at IKEM.

A white coat, a name badge, shoes to change into, and a Hepatitis B vaccination are required for the internship.

A student shall enrol for at least 10 internships twice an academic year in the electronic enrolment system following offers from individual teachers. The total amount of internships shall be 20 every 2 semesters. The amount of 10 internships is completely obligatory and requires 80% attendance concerning practical trainings and internships.

CREDIT

A credit for each semester is to be granted by the assistant with whom the particular student completes an internship. The student shall also ask the assistant to enter the credit into the faculty register (SIS). The assistant shall also enter the credit into the student´s book.

A credit is to be granted on the condition of the student’s 100% attendance at the practical training, i.e. always following 10 internship sessions (see Point 2).

Attendance at individual forms of study shall be confirmed by the teacher´s signature and name tag on the 5th Year Internal Medicine Sheet. This confirmation will be issued following each internship session. The credit will also be entered into the SIS before the examination date.

EXAMINATION

The examination will consist of a multiple-choice test.

Examination dates: There will always be four dates between 15 May and 30 June 2013 and two dates between 1 September and 30 September 2013.

Registration for examination: electronically - to the electronic enrolment system

Only those students who have been granted the credit may take an examination.

Cancellation of registration for an examination:

A student may cancel their registration for an examination in the electronic enrolment system 1 week before the date of the examination at the latest.

Those 5th year students who are leaving to study at a foreign university shall complete 20 study units within two internal medicine subdisciplines (10 units in each subdiscipline). An examination will be recognized provided the student has passed it pursuant to the rules of the university at which they study. It is recommendable to arrange details with the Department Head in person before leaving.

1. Bedside clinical investigation of patients with typical and less typical diseases in choosen subspecialization in internal medicine. Analysis of the case with the clinical teacher.

2. 2 days at emergency ward

3. 1 day at department of gastrointestinal endoscopy

4. 1 day at department of invasive cardiology
