A one-semester course of English in the first year of the Bachelor's Physical Therapy programme (summer semester). The course focuses on the practical application of professional language. The course is taught through seminars focusing on general and specialized medical terminology, and also serves as an introduction to taking a medical history from an English-speaking patient. The course is also aimed at improving student competencies in foreign language spoken production.
Aim of the course -

The primary aim of the course is to introduce students to the rules of history taking in English-speaking patients and to broaden their knowledge of professional and lay medical terminology.

On the basis of specialized medical histories (relevant to the field of physical therapy), the course will also contribute to the improvement of students' general linguistic competence, especially in the area of grammar and syntax.

Skills:

  • ability to take a medical history from an English-speaking patient,
  • improvement of basic foreign language competencies,
  • communication fluency (communication with the patient, instructions, directions),
  • ability to understand simple professional text.

Assessment: C (credit/zápočet)

Students will receive their credit if they meet the following conditions:

1) attendance (at least 70%),

2) class work including home preparation (i.e. completition of all e-learning assignments);

3) successful completion of the credit test (pass mark 70%).

The credit test includes reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar and other material covered in the seminars or in the e-learning assignments (cf. EL I-III).

The test can be retaken three times.

General knowledge of English vocabulary, grammar and syntax at B1/B2 level according to SERR.

Basic knowledge of the formation of Latin and Greek plurals (see the compulsory course "Základy lékařské terminologie" - C1FY011).
