Pedodontics deals with complex preventive and curative care of the oral cavity of a growing and developing individual (from the birth to the age of 18), which requires following knowledge: Development of deciduous and permanent dentition and development of jaws. Principles of communication with a child patient, behavior management of a child during the dental treatment. Examination of a child including the evaluation of the dental age and basic orthodontic diagnosis. Diagnostics of the most common diseases of the orofacial area in children and adolescents, assessment of a treatment plan. Complex dental treatment for teeth in deciduous and permanent dentition in all of their developmental stages in children and adolescents. Basic restorative procedures, treatment of dental caries, dental pulp diseases and their complications (filling, vital pulpotomy, pulpectomy, stepwise excavation). Basic epidemiological terminology of dental caries and periodontal diseases in children and adolescents. Primary, secondary and tertiary prevention in terms of dental care for children. Fluorides and other chemical substances in prevention of dental caries in children and adolescents. Practical performance of preventive procedures (including fissure sealing and preventive fillings). Providing information about dental caries prevention to children and their parents, giving practical instructions and training of appropriate tooth brushing techniques for all particular age groups. Basic surgical procedures (extraction, incision, decapsulation, exstirpation, excision), their indications and carrying out in a child patient. Knowledge of interceptive dentistry principles in children and adolescents. Symptoms of infectious diseases and other systemic diseases in the oral cavity in children and in adolescents. Diseases of oral mucosa and periodontal pathology. Indications of mucogingival surgical procedures in children and in adolescents. Selection of patients with orthodontic anomalies and cooperation with orthodontists, basic orthodontic-surgical procedures. Principles of prosthodontic treatment in children and in adolescents, indications of preformed crowns and space maintainers in children. Management of pain during dental treatment in children, indications for the use of local anesthesia including practical procedure. Knowledge of premedication, conscious sedation, analgosedation and general anesthesia indications. Dental traumatology in children. Basic classification of dental trauma injuries, types of treatment and sequels of dental trauma. Pedodontic management of children with special needs requirements (children with disabilities, systemic diseases, oncological disease), cooperation of pediatric dentist with other related medical specialities.
