Gaining a comprehensive overview of issues of public health, medical law and social medicine. Emphasis is placed especially on information that reflects current issues of public health and medical law in practice, focusing on the widest possible use of acquired knowledge in the exercise of the medical profession.

On completion of the course students:
shall be familiar with fundamental principals of public health
shall be familiar with the population approach to the study of health and illness
shall be familiar with basics of medical demography and health status assessment
shall understand social and economic determinants of population health
shall identify the social groups with hihg health hazard
shall understand relationship between social inequalities and health
shall be familiar with basics of health economics and current issues in health care financing
shall have knowledge of the most important issues of health policy from the global perspective
shall be informed about models of world health systems, management and delivery of services
shall be able to identify strengths and weaknesses of particular health system.

Public health:

concept of public health, global public health. Health and health determinants. Basics of medical demography; measurement of population health, data sources and the main indicators used in national and international health policy. Leading causes of mortality in international context. Health-related quality of life. World health systems in international comparison, current trends. Health and health system in the Czech Republic. Health policy in the European Union (EU). European Health Consumer Index: assessment of quality and effeciency of the health systems in Europe. Health promotion, disease prevention and health literacy. World Health Organization (WHO) and its role in public health; WHO policy framework, strategies and programmes.

Medical law:

legal issues in medicine in a global context. Basics of medical law in the EU. The main areas of the EU legal health regulation, cross - border health care. Convention on Human Rights and Biomedicine and its application in health care. Legal aspects of patient-doctor relationship; patient rights. Informed consent, medical confidentiality. Medical malpractice.

Social healthcare:

Social structure and health and health inequalities: inequalities in health status, inequalities in access to health services. Vulnerable social groups. Social health care and community care. Social geriatrics. Social paediatrics: the main risk factors in child health development, syndrome CAN, foster and institutional care. Social health care for elderly and integrated community care. Chronic morbidity, disability and its social consequences in older people. Demographic aging and longevity and consequences for health policy and health care. Migration, ethnicity, and health.

The course is completed by the credit and the State Final Examination.

Credits: In order to get credits for the course students are expected to participate in all webinars and to successfully pass a multiple choice test in the end of the course based on lectures and additional materials. The test will take place in a Moodle platform.

The test will include 30 questions with one correct answers (30 points total). The test is passed when the result is minimum 24 points. Two attempts are allowed.

Lectures take place in presence form (in the Faust House, Karlovo namesti 40, room 13). if not stated otherwise in the SIS - Course Schedule

The state exam is expected to be in presence form, in the Faust House, Karlovo namesti 40, room 13.

The exam consultations are organised in a presence or distance form.

4. Medical demography:  data sources, demographic processes, demographic trends, demographic statics / dynamics, use of demographic indicators in healthcare

5. Measurement of population health, data sources and the main indicators used in national and international health policy, international health databases

6. Mortality: data sources, basic indicators, leading causes of global mortality, international comparison

7. Morbidity: data sources, basic indicators, the leading causes of global morbidity

8. Quality of life: measuring of quality of life; health-related quality of life

9. Social inequalities and health:  inequalities in health status, inequalities in access to health services. Vulnerable social groups

10. Social pediatrics: the main risk factors in child health development, foster and institutional care, related risks

11. Social pediatrics: Syndrome CAN

12. Demographic aging, chronic morbidity, disability and consequences for health policy and health care

13. Community and long-term care. Healthy aging.

14. Health promotion and disease prevention concept and theoretical background, the Ottawa Charter. 

15. Health literacy: definitions, measuring of the level of health literacy. Impact of health literacy on health behaviour, health care expenditures and usage of the health care.
