The image of musical subcultures before 1989 is represented today mainly by the most famous bands such as Plastic People of the Universe, Prague Choice or Visací Zámek. If we look deeper, we find that there are many more layers to this subject. Numerous subcultural communities were formed in every decade of socialist Czechoslovakia, from the jazzmen of the late 1940s to the de-pesos of the late 1980s. There were hundreds of bands and thousands of players in each generation. In the 1980s, there was also a big genre boom, when alongside rock subgenres (punk, new wave, metal...) there was also reggae, new romantics, industrial and others. How to make sense of this vast and elemental jumble and how to explore these phenomena without resorting to oversimplification is what this specialised lecture will try to provide some possible answers to.
The course will proceed chronologically, with possible conceptual grasps of each topic presented alongside empirical explanations. The interpretation will be supplemented by audiovisual and material examples (records, tapes, printed matter). The lecture is suitable for those who are working on a bachelor's or master's thesis on this topic. However, all interested parties are of course welcome.
