In this course, we will examine the figure of Jesus' Mother as she is portrayed in various writings of the New Testament and in Old Testament prefigurations, which, in light of the fullness of Revelation in Christ, acquire interesting Marian connotations. We will then see how the Church Fathers reflect on biblical Mariology and consider the place and mission of the Virgin Mary in the life and mission of the Church. The testimony of the Scriptures and the Fathers is fundamental to the entire subsequent tradition and influences not only theological treatises and biblical commentaries, but also the history of art and the piety of God's people.
