Annotation -
This subject provides information about procedures and apparatuses used in the manufacturing of drugs of natural origin. It deals with the preservation, storage and mechanical adjustments of biological material, with the extraction, isolation and purification of pharmaceutically important substances of plant origin, and with the quality control of raw materials and final products. Attention is also paid to pharmacopoeial regulations, and principles of good manufacturing practice.

Learning outcomes -

The course Technology of Natural Drugs builds on the knowledge and skills acquired in the fields of: Pharmacognosy, pharmacology, anatomy, analytical fields.

After completing the course, students can use the following terms (including their commonly used abbreviations): Czech Pharmacopoeia, regulatory authorities, EMA, FDA, Pharmeuropa, identity tests, purity tests, content determination, impurity, standardized, quantified and other extracts, macerate, infusum, decoctum, tincture, DER, percolation, Soxhlet apparatus, syrup, ...

They know the principles and use of the following methods and processing methods: Percolation, maceration, preservation, decoction, drying, sieve analysis, grinding, crushing and mixing. Methods of control analytical methods.

Learning outcomes: Based on the acquired knowledge and skills, students will:

  • Become familiar with the processing of plant material (collection, preservation, drying and storage) 
  • Acquire knowledge about extraction methods and how to process plant material based on the properties of the ingredients 
  • In practical exercises, they will learn to prepare various dosage forms containing medicinal plants (ointments, syrups, tinctures, extracts, ...) 
  • Learn to design and prepare herbal tea mixtures 
  • Become familiar with the quality control of medicinal plants and their evaluation 
  • Gain insight into the industrial processing of medicinal plants 
  • Become familiar with the legislation concerning medicinal plants 
  • They will also acquire basic knowledge of the use and processing of bee products 
  • As part of the course, they will visit several companies involved in the processing of medicinal plants
