Annotation -
The subject acquaints students with the historical development of pharmacy as a whole and its individual branches from the beginning of the pharmaceutical function to the contemporary history of pharmacy in our territory, and selectively also in Europe and North America. To the necessary extent, the history of pharmacy is set in the context of the Czech and general history. The basics of the history of pharmacy related disciplines (medicine, natural sciences,) are discussed, too. The emphasis is placed on the historical period covered by the topic of student's dissertation (Ancient History - Middle Ages - the Early Modern Period - Modern History – Contemporary History). The course introduces students to the basics of historical research methodology (working with sources, heuristics, criticism, interpretation, synthesis), auxiliary sciences of history, archival science and museum studies. After completing the course, students will acquire the skills necessary to conduct their own historical research in the field of history of pharmacy and a thorough knowledge of the historical development of the pharmacy, with an emphasis on understanding the historical roots of current pharmaceutical practice. Students will be able to independently search for relevant historical sources stored in Czech and foreign memory institutions. They will acquire the procedures of working with sources and literature relevant to the topic. Thus they will gain a broad basis for their own original research.
