Annotation -
The aim of this subject is to acquaint students of Pharmacy with the basic principles of providing first aid after a sudden deterioration in health or a serious injury. After completing the course, students will be able to call emergency medical services, perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation with the use of an AED in adults and children up to 18 years of age, stop massive bleeding and recognize severe symptoms caused by internal or neurological diseases. Students will also learn about the organization of pre-hospital emergency care in the Czech Republic.

Course completion requirements -

Credit can be obtained after all of the following conditions have been met:

  1. Attendance at 4 out of 5 lectures (80%)
  2. Credit MCQ test completed with more than 75% pass rate
  3. Participation in at least the 2nd practical sessions with hands-on CPR training (50%)

In case of unexpected absence from both practical sessions (e.g. due to illness), an appointment for the practical examination is necessary.
Attendance cannot be replaced by any proof of previous First Aid or CPR training, except at the FaF or LF already completed during previous years.

Syllabus -

Lectures

  1. Resuscitation I. (importance of first aid, calling emergency services, cardiac arrest, CPR in adults)
  2. Resuscitation II (use of automated external defibrillator, resuscitation of children under 18 years, airway obstruction)
  3. Medical emergencies (chest pain, shortness of breath, unconsciousness, convulsions, stroke, allergies, intoxication)
  4. Surgical emergencies (life-threatening injuries, massive bleeding, electric injury, sudden abdominal pain, burn injury)
  5. Emergency services (chain of survival, organisation of emergency medical services, instructions for credit test)

Practical exercises

  1. Visit to the EMS (ambulance and helicopter base, emergency department)
  2. Practical CPR training (mandatory)
