Annotation -
The subject introduces selected topics from general psychology, medical psychology, and contemporary neuroscience, which are relevant for medicine. The emphasis is put on bio-psycho-social framework in medicine including the intricacies of communication with the patient in various clinical situations. A concepts of embedded counselling, narrative sensitivity, and collaborative relationships are to be discussed as well.

  1.  Introduction to psychology; Why future physicians should bother about psychology? Arguments from interpersonal neurobiology.
  2.  Balance between personal and professional development: self-reflective practice, motivation, expectations, needs, and emotions.
  3.  Family, health, and illness. Stress and health. Disease as a stressful situation, coping strategies. Burn-out syndrome.
  4.  Challenges and dilemmas of doctor-patient communication in clinical practice. Therapeutic relationship in medicine. Embedded counselling.
  5.  Bio-psycho-social model and psychosomatic perspective; an overview.
