Annotation
Ten-week intensive Czech language course (Beginners level II) taught at the Language Department, Third Faculty of Medicine. This course is intended for Erasmus students enrolled in medical or natural science programs at Charles University. It serves as a follow-up course for those who had already completed an introductory Czech language course,Beginners I, at Charles University or a Czech course on the same level at their home institution. The primary aim of the course is to expand students’ vocabulary, particularly in areas relevant to medicine and the natural sciences, or other fields of their specialization. Instruction integrates advanced grammatical structures with domain-specific terminology to support academic communication within the students' respective disciplines. Additionally, selected topics of everyday conversation are included, with an emphasis on the use of complex grammatical structures to further develop students’ linguistic competence.

Aim of the course

The course aims at facilitating the students´ study in the Czech Republic providing the Czech course at the Beginners level II (after having achieved some preceding basic knowledge of Czech). It focuses on pre-intermediate Czech Language for Foreigners - vocabulary, grammar, and communication skills. At the end of the course students will be able to make themselves understood in basic situations and also to master some vocabulary in the field of science and medicine . The course includes also some topics of historical and cultural background, respecting their needs and interests during their Erasmus stay at the Charles University. There are also addition writing assignments included in the course so the students can work on improving their writing skills as well out of class with the teacher's feedback.

Course completion requirements

 

Written test reflecting the topics covered in the course which includes a short essay on a chosen topic, held in the last week of instruction;

and an oral Colloquium in case the student´s home university may require the graded examination.

Syllabus

 1. Introduction to the course

Students introduce themselves - show their level of the Czech knowledge, talking about their home university lives and fields of study (students of this course should be able to use the conjugated forms of the Czech verbs in the present tense, possibly some structures in the past tense and structures and vocabulary complying with the course level)

Introduction to the course - choice of topics, forms of self-study practice and distribution of the writing assignments (discussing the tasks and the class evaluation)

Life at the Charles University and in the CR - getting around, information about students' lives and their expectations of the course, addressing their special requirements (checking comprehension and understanding of the basic structures and phrases used for giving information about students themselves, and making themselves understand the native speakers)

Example vocabulary: research, results, research conclusions, rate, weight, height, measurement, temperature, human body, animals/species, health and illness, elements, chemical compounds,basic geographical terms

2. Famous Czechs and their professional achievements

Revision and further work on the irregular forms of the past tense verb forms, using vocabulary from the field of Science and Medicine, and general history 

The CV – students will work on the written form of their own CV, using more complex grammatical structures in the present and the past, practice of possesives and cases related to such structures (e.g. using numbers – months, years, dates in the context, Genitive, practice of the possesives – adjectives and pronouns etc.)

Names and work of the historical and the present institutions which are involved in their fields of research/study

Vocabulary: scientific fields, facilities, institutions, historical facts about the Charles University and their faculties

3. Nature and the climate in the world and the CR

Grammar: Future tense of perfective and imperfective verbs, using complex structures with conjuctions and subordinate clauses (e.g. use of když/až, a/ale, nebo/tak)

Analysis of a short text on the seasons, weather and climate of the CR - current situation and the changes, their impact on the population

Grammar: using Jaký/Jak/Jako, Který vs. Jaký, explanation of the use of adjectives and adverbs in Czech, their differences from English 

Vocabulary: months, seasons, years, the weather, talking about specific climate aspects of the CR and their home country, nature, basic geography of the CR

4. Life in the City vs. life in the country

Lifestyle - effect of work, sport and nutrition on the individual quality of life

Human body - from the point of view of Medicine and Biology, common injuries and diseases

Demography of the CR - number of population, standart of living, housing in the CR, wages and salaries

Grammmar: Adjectives vs. Adverbs – comparisons (expressing differences, more positive, negative, increase vs.dicrease, verb phrases used form comparison and evaluation 

Vocabulary: at the doctor - phrases used for doctor/patient communication, asking about medical problems, pain and diseases, well-being, feelings 

5. Czech education system

Specific fields of Czech for medicine and science - reflecting students' fields of study 

Future careers and jobs - students express their plans and wishes, emphasis on specific vocabulary connected to education, science and academic career 

Grammar:  introduction of the basic forms of conditionals (expressing the wishes – Chtěl/a bych…, Přála bych si…., Líbilo by se mi… etc.), comparing with the forms of the Past and the Future tenses in Czech

Vocabulary: job market, skills, knowledge, looking for a job/part-time job for holidays, improving qualification, hobbies and interests

Preparation for the written final test and essay - discussing the topics and revision of the course materials
