Annotation -
The course General Practice II is a continuation of the course General Practice I. taught in the 5th year. It consists of a one-week internship in a general practitioner's surgery and a final credit seminar where students, facilitated by the lecturer, will report to other colleagues on their internships and present their case studies from their internships.

Aim of the course -

The course aims to provide students with a deeper understanding of the field of General Practical Medicine, primarily through their own experience. It introduces students to the holistic view of human health and the complex long-term care that characterizes the work of the general practitioner. Students should gain new insights and greater confidence in the differential diagnosis of common diseases. They should become familiar with the complex care of elderly and poly-morbid patients and its specificities. They should understand the importance and limits of evidence-based medicine in primary care.

 The importance of the course for all medical students lies primarily in demonstrating and practising the integration of all medical knowledge and communication skills in complex patient care.  It shows the necessity of working with epidemiology, general history, patients' background, knowledge of the specifics of different population groups and psychological and psychosomatic rules in diagnosis, therapy, as well as in the long-term care of the bio-psycho-social health of a person. Students should understand the importance of the doctor-patient relationship and become familiar with the terms "overdiagnosis" and "overtreatment". They should learn the principles of differential diagnosis of common diseases and their rational therapy in the field of primary care. They should also learn the principles of patient-oriented care.

Course completion requirements -

The course is finished by awarding the credit, which students receive based on:

  •  Completion of a five-day internship in a GP surgery of at least 4 hours per day.
  • Completion of the Internship Report and Primary Care Case Report in the form of a text and one .ppt slide
  • Active participation in the Final Seminar by giving a verbal presentation of your internship as well as your case report using one slide
