Annotation -
The foreign language examination in doctoral studies comprehensively tests students' language competences at the B2/C1 level with a focus on professional and academic skills. The exam includes a presentation of the dissertation project and the literature studied for the exam, followed by a discussion with the examiner. Students demonstrate proficiency in professional language and the ability to present a topic, to formulate ideas and evaluative opinions accurately, and to respond promptly and appropriately in the language.

Requirements to the exam -

The examination consists of the preparation of written materials and a subsequent oral examination. Successful completion of the exam requires a minimum of B2/C1 language proficiency, with an emphasis on academic language competence and professional language.

Students prepare for language attestations individually or in courses at the Language Centre of the Faculty of Arts, Charles University. At the same time, they have the possibility of individual consultations with JC teachers.


Standard exam

Students take the following written materials:

structured professional CV (1-2 standard pages)
dissertation proposal (3-4 standard pages) - requirements for structure and content can be found here.
In the oral part of the standard exam, students present and evaluate the submitted written materials, especially the dissertation plan, followed by a discussion with the examiner.

During the examination, students demonstrate their knowledge of professional language and their ability to formulate their own opinions, evaluative statements and to respond promptly and appropriately.

Written submissions are sent electronically to the instructor in advance, normally no later than 7 days before the examination date, unless otherwise arranged.

Students arrange exam dates individually with the responsible teachers.
