NEW from 2021/22, the course ends with an exam and is also interchangeable with the separate Academic Reading exam in the Common Core (ASZAJ2000).
In practice, this means that a student who has the Common Core exam "Foreign Language II - Academic Reading" prescribed in the curriculum can choose whether to enrol in the stand-alone exam - code ASZRJ2000, or enrol in the course "Academic Reading" - code ASZAJ3050, ending with exam. The course exam will then automatically fulfill the requirement for the 2nd language exam in the common core (so the student no longer writes down the code ASZAJ2000). Advantages and disadvantages - see exam requirements.
Students who do not need the Zk in English as a Second Language but want to improve their work with professional foreign language texts, learn different reading techniques, expand their academic vocabulary and become familiar with more complex grammatical structures can also enrol in the course.
We also recommend the course Academic Reading as a supplementary subject in preparation for the oral part of the exam B2.
This course is not intended for Erasmus students.

Kurz je jednosemestrální, 1 x 2 hod./týdně. Základem je práce s anglickými odbornými texty, vyučovacím jazykem je čeština a angličtina. Je určen studentům se znalostí angličtiny přibližně na úrovni B2.
Nově je od r. 2021/22 předmět zakončen zkouškou a současně je v záměnnosti se samostatnou zkouškou Akademické čtení v rámci společného základu (ASZAJ2000).
V praxi to znamená, že student, který má ve studijním plánu předepsánu zkoušku společného základu „Cizí jazyk II - Akademické čtení“ si může vybrat, zda se zapíše na samostatnou zkoušku – kód ASZRJ2000, nebo se zapíše do kurzu „Akademické čtení“ - kód ASZAJ3050, zakončeného zkouškou. Tuto již nemusí následně složit, zkoušku získá splněním úkolů v rámci semináře. Zkouška z kurzu mu pak automaticky splní povinnost zkoušky z 2. jazyka ve společném základu (kód ASZAJ2000 si tedy už student nezapisuje). Výhody a nevýhody – viz požadavky ke zkoušce.
Do kurzu se mohou zapsat i studenti, kteří zkoušku z angličtiny jako 2. jazyka nepotřebují, ale chtějí se zlepšit v práci s odborným cizojazyčným textem, osvojit si různé techniky čtení, rozšířit si akademickou slovní zásobu a seznámit se se složitějšími gramatickými strukturami.
Předmět akademické čtení doporučujeme též studentům jako doplňkový předmět při přípravě na ústní odbornou část zkoušky B2.

The objective of the course is to enhance reading comprehension of English academic texts in students through reading practice, translation and interpretation, which should lead to a successful completion of the Academic Reading exam.

Cílem předmětu je rozvoj dovednosti porozumění akademickému textu v anglickém jazyce tak, aby studenti a studentky úspěšně zvládli povinnou zkoušku - pomocí praktického nácviku četby odborných textů, jejich překladu a interpretace.

Course completion requirements -
Credit requirements:
regular active participation in the course (possibly also in online lessons), minimum 60%; completion of specific sub-tasks during the semester; presentation of a selected professional text and passing the academic vocabulary test (60%). The course ends with an exam in which the student presents a selected academic text of his/her choice and demonstrates on the spot understanding of a short, previously unknown text in his/her field.
Advantages of the newly designed exam, which concludes the course ASZAJ3050 (compared to Zk ASZAJ2000):
lower stress level - the student works continuously, the assessment is not based on only one outcome in the traditional exam
acquisition of new knowledge and development of competences (in one semester of continuous work the student will significantly improve his/her ability to work with foreign language text).
Disadvantages:
higher time commitment
the need for regular preparation

Podmínky atestace: Podmínkou splnění zkoušky je pravidelná aktivní účast v kurzu (případně i na online lekcích), min.60%; plnění konkrétních dílčích úkolů během semestru, prezentace vybraného odborného textu a splnění průběžných testů z akademické slovní zásoby (60%). Předmět je na poslední hodině ukončen testem, kdy studující na místě prokáže porozumění krátkému, dosud neznámému textu z jeho/jejího oboru. Samostatná zkouška se již neskládá, nahrazuje ji práce během semestru.
Výhody nově koncipované Zk, jíž je zakončen kurz ASZAJ3050 (oproti Zk ASZAJ2000):
nižší míra stresu – student pracuje průběžně, hodnocení není založeno jen na jednom výstupu v rámci tradiční zkoušky
získání nových znalostí a rozvoj kompetencí (za semestr průběžné práce se student výrazně posune ve schopnosti práce s cizojazyčným textem - psaní summary a vyhledávání key words, vytváření mind maps). V kurzu se také v několika hodinách zaměříme na vybrané gramatické aspekty akademických textů a otázku překladu (práce s překladači, problematika tzv. false friends apod.)
Nevýhody:
vyšší časová náročnost
nutnost pravidelné přípravy na semináře

Work with professional texts in the humanities:
understanding the meaning of the text as a whole, understanding the structure of the text, capturing details in the text and working with vocabulary
introducing students to the techniques of orientation, selective and close reading
practising receptive skills (summarising the content of the text, selecting key words, matching key words/information from the text and selecting from options, mind-map, etc.)
working with dictionaries (translation and interpretation) and internet translators
familiarisation with the problems of translating technical texts - the main pitfalls, what to avoid, etc.
familiarisation with selected grammatical structures typical for professional texts in English and their use in practice

Práce s odbornými texty z humanitních oborů:
pochopení smyslu textu jako celku, porozumění struktuře textu, zachycení detailů v textu a práce se slovní zásobou
seznámení studentů s technikou orientačního, selektivního a detailního čtení
procvičování dovedností receptivního charakteru (shrnutí obsahu textu, výběr klíčových slov, přiřazování klíčových slov/informací z textu a výběr z možností, mind-maps aj.)
