Annotation -
Today, there is an increasing emphasis on measuring student performance in school. In educational settings, testing and regular assessment are becoming increasingly important in comparing the success and failure of individual pupils, teachers and whole schools.
This course is aimed at imparting the necessary knowledge and practical skills about assessment methods in education to those interested in future teaching careers. It will not only prepare them for the practical selection and design of appropriate assessment methods, but also equip them with the competencies to engage in informed debate about the selection and assessment of appropriate methods in relation to the chosen pedagogical goal.

Aim of the course: the aim of the course is to provide candidates with the knowledge and skills to be used in the assessment of pupils and all stakeholders in the context of teaching and learning. The course will focus primarily on the construction of quantitative assessment methods (tests, quizzes, performance exams, etc.) that are proven, verifiable and based on simple statistical procedures. The outcome of the course will be the demonstration of acquired knowledge through a written test and skills through an assigned project on the construction and evaluation of a test method.

Acquired knowledge: the student understands the basic methodological concepts (validity, reliability, standardization, etc.), can distinguish between them, explain them and apply them in the context of teaching. The student has knowledge of the criteria of a useful evaluation method in a school context. The student knows several possible approaches to assessing individuals in school settings and the most familiar tests along with knowledge of their advantages and disadvantages. The student understands and can navigate the complexities of measuring and assessing human subjects.

Acquired skills: the student can use basic statistical methods (calculate descriptive statistics, use correlations and analyse items). In the context of school instruction, the student can develop his/her own assessment methods and critically evaluate them. The student can critically evaluate assessment methods based on several different criteria. The student can have a worthwhile debate on the selection and applicability of assessment methods related to a specific pedagogical outcome.
