Annotation

This course presents several currently debated topics in grammaticalization research, ranging from cognition, discourse and sociolinguistics to evolutionary linguistics, framed by the following general question: how has each linguistic field tackled the phenomenon of grammaticalization and what are the issues they bring up? The seminars are designed mostly around active discussions based on students' critical reflection on the reading, with some practical analytic tasks when appropriate.

Course completion requirements

- Students will work towards writing a research abstract of 500 words. The abstracts will be presented in class.

- Students will each lead at least one discussion.

- Active participation during the seminars.

- Discussion posts.
