H. G. Wells bývá považován za jednoho ze zakladatelů žánru sci-fi, byl ale i veřejným intelektuálem, politickým utopistou a vystudovaným přírodovědcem. Na začátku minulého století pak patřil (k nelibosti britských modernistů) mezi nejčtenější spisovatele a fascinoval širokou veřejnost.
Kurz se zaměří na důkladnou četbu čtyř raných Wellsových novel: Stroj času, Ostrov doktora Moreaua, Neviditelného a Válku světů. Novely budeme číst průběžně celý semestr a nasvěcovat je s pomocí doplňujících textů z různých perspektiv: z pozic antropocénu, transhumanismu a postkolonialismu; budeme se ale ptát i šířeji po vztahu vědy a literatury, “myšlenky” a její “ilustrace” příběhem, ohmatávat hranice intelektuálního, estetického a ideologického sdělení v textu.
