Last update: MUDr. Zdeněk Kostrouch, CSc. (14.02.2013)
This eligible subject consists of a series of interactive seminars that will introduce to the participants new tools of biomedical informatics and teach practical skills in bioinformatics on bioinformatical analysis of selected topics. The seminars are divided into a part that presents a particular topic and a practical interactive seminar. During the practical part, students will be able to analyze selected problems using individual computer stations. A series of ten (or eleven) seminars is prepared. The selected topics project to more than one medical discipline. Each participant will be assigned a personal project, that will be presented to all participants in the last two seminars. It is expected that this personal presentation will represent a modern view of the selected topic, that should help the author, as well as other participants to be oriented in the selected topic on the most updated way. It may have, although it is not strictly required a form of a small diploma thesis. Work on the "thesis" will show students how to work on the defined project, how to obtain bioinformatical data, assemble, write and present a thesis.
The tutors are Marta Kostrouchová and Zdenek Kostrouch and members of their labs (assistant professors):
Kateřina Šimečková, Petr Yilma, Markéta Kostrouchová, Johana Kollárová, Vladimír Zima, Kateřina Šebková. The relatively big number of tutors will ensure that each participant will get personal attention. The maximal number of participants is 20.

1. Description of the elective subject, its structure, and objectives: This elective subject has knowledge, skill, and broader intellectual goals. In the first aspect (knowledge and skills), it is designed to effectively present the current state of informatics in relation to biology and medicine. It will actively cover approaches and tools of contemporary bioinformatics, including the storage of scientific and medical information, retrieval from databases, specific applications, and further analysis. In the second aspect, specific areas relevant to understanding important concepts and areas of biology and medicine will be discussed. These areas include the evolutionary concept of biology, regulatory mechanisms of metabolism, development, cellular and tissue homeostasis, tissue turnover, cell specialization, and differentiation.
Seminar 1: Introduction to Integrative Systems Biology. The introductory seminar provides an overview of basic informatics tools for text-based searching, comparison, and characterization of biomedical knowledge and data. It presents modern model systems and their integration into a comprehensive bioinformatics approach. It showcases the state of development in specific model organisms and their connection to human biology and modern medicine. It also provides a closer presentation of the C. elegans model and its significance in understanding cell specification regulation and a holistic biological perspective.
MUDr. Zdeněk Kostrouch, CSc.
The seminars will be conducted ONLINE on designated days from 2:00 PM to 1:30 PM.

2.Modern Informatics Tools: In this seminar, we will use informatics tools to explore interconnected databases containing biological data from various systems.
MUDr. Marta Kostrouchová, CSc.
Wednesday

3.Evolutionary Concept of Biology: A concept that provides a unifying perspective on the structures and functions of biological processes. We will analyze the relatedness of genes and proteins, determine their phylogeny, and construct cladograms.
MUDr. Zdeněk Kostrouch, CSc.
Wednesday

5. A Systems View of Regulatory Networks b/ Insulin Receptor Pathway Regulation, Diabetes, and Metabolic Syndrome: In this seminar, we will demonstrate that the medically significant and complex syndrome represents an exceptionally interesting topic. It is not only attractive for potential treatment but also for highly effective prevention of associated complications.
