The course aims to acquaint students with the application of the principles of proper nutrition in practice, to orient in diagnostic methods in dietetics and be able to choose the right nutritional intervention with regard to various factors. Students will be acquainted with the functioning of energy metabolism, the possibilities of determining energy dispensing during various activities and the optimal need for nutrients. Subsequently, they will be presented with current approaches in sports nutrition for individual types of exercise and the specifics of nutrition of certain groups of the population such as children, pregnant and lactating women or seniors. Furthermore, the subject will deal with diet therapy for various types of diseases. An overview will also be provided the most frequently used food supplements, including sports supplementation, in the form of a description of the supplement, its use, focus and enumeration of scientific studies dealing with the supplement. Students will also be introduced to available nutrition programs and databases, work with these tools and the possibility of compiling nutrition plans. Overall, students will gain an overview of how to adjust the diet with regard to a number of factors such as age and gender individuals, work and physical activity, the presence of disease or other lifestyle factors.

The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the practical application of the principles of proper nutrition, orientation in diagnostic methods in dietetics and to be able to choose an appropriate nutritional intervention procedure with regard to various factors in specific population groups, or in selected clinical diseases.

Knowledge

Basic terms: rational diet, energy metabolism, nutritional pyramid, food components, alternative nutrition; general recommendations, diagnostic methods in dietology, specifics of sports nutrition

Skills (the student can)

- list individual factors for optimal diet composition

- name the individual components of the diet, their importance and specifics in sports

- describe diagnostic procedures in dietetics (eating habits - history, interview, questionnaire survey, basic rules for drawing up a menu; somatic parameters and body composition - basic somatic parameters and their assessment, body composition parameters, methodologies)

- describe the basic principles of selected alternative nutritional directions

Competence (the student is competent)

- list the factors influencing the individual setting of the diet and menu

- explain the importance and differences of individual food components

- define and explain the basic principles of diagnostic methods in dietetics

- list the basic parameters of the assessment of eating habits

- theoretically describe the principles of evaluation of basic somatic parameters

- to orientate and describe the theoretical principles of body composition analysis methods

- describe the positives and negatives of selected alternative nutritional directions

- describe the specifics of dietary recommendations for population groups
