ACADEMIC DISCOURSE
This course familiarizes students with crucial concepts and conspicuous tendencies in current English academic discourse, both written and spoken. It also offers insight into the broader socio-cultural context from which academic discourse stems. The course aims at a systematic account of some of the most essential aspects of academic English at diverse levels, ranging from lexical and grammatical patterns to textual, discourse and various broader contextual parameters. In addition, it raises the students´awareness of the prominent conventions established in diverse academic genres, subgenres and text types. The course is designed to provide the students with adequate theoretical knowledge, to familiarize them with relevant analytical tools and enhance their practical formulation skills, which should, among others, facilitate the writing of their own diploma thesis and its defense.

AKADEMICKÝ / ODBORNÝ DISKURS
Kurz seznamuje posluchače s klíčovými koncepty a výraznými tendencemi v oblasti současného anglického odborného diskursu, psaného i mluveného. Rovněž se pokouší poskytnout posluchačům vhled do širšího socio-kulturního kontextu, z něhož odborný diskurs vychází. Kurz směřuje k systematickému probrání zásadních aspektů odborného jazyka na různých rovinách, od aspektů lexikálních a gramatických přes rysy textové, diskursní až po různé širší kontextové parametry. Nadto kultivuje povědomí posluchačů o typických žánrech, subžánrech a typech textů odborného diskursu a relevantních konvencích, které jsou v nich zavedené. Kurz je koncipován tak, aby posluchačům poskytl patřičné odborné zázemí, vybavil je relevantními analytickými nástroji a zlepšil i jejich praktické formulační dovednosti, což by mělo usnadnit například psaní i obhajobu diplomové práce.

Students take an active role in seminars
Students may miss one class
Students will turn in their seminar paper a) featuring their own research dealing with a relevant topic or b) featuring a comprehensive analysis of a sample of the English academic discourse (at least 15 minutes)
Students will give a presentation on a given topic (at least 15 minutes)
In case the seminar paper fails to satisfy formal or content requirements, the student is allowed to resubmit an adequate version of the same
NOTE: The candidate´s proficiency and formulation skills are included in assessment criteria.

Student se aktivně podílí na práci v semináři
Toleruje se maximálně jedna absence
Student vypracuje seminární práci a) založenou na vlastním výzkumu na relevantní téma nebo b) mající podobu komplexní analýzy ukázky anglického odborného stylu (nejméně 3 strany)
V případě neadekvátní úrovně formulační nebo obsahové má student možnost jednou seminární práci přepracovat
Student přednese v semináři prezentaci na zadané téma (nejméně na 15 minut)
Pozn. Součástí kritérií hodnocení je i jazyková a formulační úroveň.
