Annotation -
The course focuses on the education of students with social disadvantages. The curriculum is based on the broad concept of social disadvantage, which in an educational setting includes any barriers to a student's education arising from socially determined causes. Attention is paid to the specificities of education and support measures for students from socially disadvantaged areas, students with a different mother tongue, students from families at risk of poverty and students from marginalised ethnic minorities.

Aim of the course -

The aim of the course is to introduce the broad concept of social disadvantage (including not only the effects of poverty, but also the lack of educational support for pupils in the home environment, language barriers, etc.) and its impact on students' education in pre-school, primary and secondary education. As part of the course, students gain a basic understanding of possible support measures and other potential interventions in the education of students with social disadvantage.

The course has 3 credits (ECTS), so the total load corresponds to 90 hours and is divided as follows:

  • 12 hours of lectures
  • 12 hours of exercises
  • 12 hours of independent study of presentations and other materials assigned in class
  • 30 hours of independent study of related literature
  • 24 hours of preparation of a seminar paper

Syllabus -

The structure of the course includes the following subtopics.

Lectures:

  1. definition of the concept of social disadvantage in the context of education
  2. identification of children and students with social disadvantages in nursery, primary and secondary schools
  3. social disadvantage as part of the concept of special educational needs, support measures in the education of students with social disadvantages
  4. the role of counsellors and assistants in the education of students with social disadvantages
  5. the importance of tutoring and leisure activities in the education of students with social disadvantages
  6. the social role of the school and material support in the education of students with social disadvantages
  7. the role of social services in the education of students with social disadvantages
  8. specifics of education of students from socially excluded localities
  9. specifics of education of socially disadvantaged Roma students
  10. specifics of education of students with a different mother tongue

Exercises:

  1. breakfast clubs and their importance in the education of pupils with social disadvantages
  2. free lunches for students with social disadvantages
  3. period poverty and its effects and in the education of students with social disadvantages
  4. low-threshold facilities and their importance in the education of students with social disadvantages
