Drawing on their knowledge of morphology, the course familiarizes students with the basic units of the syntactic description of present-day English. It focuses on the structure and functions of the simple sentence (sentence types and discourse functions, clause patterns and clause elements, negation). A contrastive point of view, comparing English and Czech syntax, is employed in the description of selected topics.
