This course familiarizes students with the tendencies, conventions and prominent features of present-day academic English, ranging from lexical, grammatical via textual, genre to broader contextual parameters. The course will facilitate the writing of the diploma project. Themes: 1.Introduction. (Communities of practice and academic cultures. Lingua franca? Role of English in contemporary academic discourse of native and non-native speakers) 2.Conspicuous lexical and grammatical parameters of academic discourse 3.Conspicuous textual, genre and stylistic parameters of academic discourse. Orality and literacy 4.Stages of scientific research and conventional organization of academic discourse. Hierarchy and functions of textual units 5.Intertextuality, interdiscoursivity and citation practice 6.Persuasion in academic discourse. Interaction with the community addressed and metadiscourse
