The course Syntax II is a continuation of the basic course in syntax. It focuses on more complex syntactic areas, such as word order, non-finite clauses, information structure, complex and compound sentences, and classification of dependent clauses. Some of the topics are presented from a contrastive point of view, comparing English and Czech syntax.

Předmět Syntax II navazuje na základní kurz syntaxe. Zaměřuje se na složitější syntaktické okruhy, např. slovosled, polovětné vazby, aktuální členění větné, souvětí a typy vět vedlejších. Vybrané jevy jsou prezentovány ve srovnání se syntaxí češtiny.

1. Word order
2. Functional sentence perspective
3. The complex sentence: types of dependent clauses (content, relative, and adverbial clauses)

Attendance at the seminars is compulsory. The final assessment comprises a seminar term paper (an analysis of syntactic phenomena in a text) and an examination. Details of the seminar paper assignment will be announced during the lectures, and are available in Moodle. The seminar paper must be marked by the teacher as acceptable before the student takes the examination. The examination consists of a written test and oral interview. Both parts comprise topics covered in Syntax I and Syntax II. The assessment includes the student's proficiency and stylistically adequate use of English. In order to take the oral part of the examination, the student must pass the written test, with the score of 70% at least. If the student fails, he or she may re-sit the examination twice.

Studenti jsou povinni se pravidelně účastnit výuky v seminářích. Předmět je zakončen seminární prací (analýza syntaktických jevů v textu) a zkouškou. Zadání práce bude upřesněno během přednášky. Zkoušku může student/ka skládat teprve v okamžiku, kdy je jeho/její seminární práce přijata vyučující jako vyhovující. Zkouška má část písemnou (test) a ústní. Obě části zahrnují témata probraná v předmětech Syntax I a Syntax II. Součástí hodnocení je i jazyková a formulační úroveň. K ústní zkoušce postupují studenti, kteří získají v písemné části zkoušky aspoň 70 % bodů. V případě neúspěchu mohou studenti zkoušku dvakrát opakovat.
