The aim of the course is to acquaint students with selected works of German written literature from the period of Naturalism to Expressionism. Emphasis is placed on literary-aesthetic and cultural-historical aspects of the discussed works. Lecture Contents: Naturalism as the first modern literary movement - program and art theory, artistic associations and magazines; prose (Holz, Schlaf), naturalistic drama (Hauptmann). Artistic movements at the turn of the century: Impressionism, Art Nouveau, Neo-romanticism, Symbolism, "Heimatkunst". Prose at the turn of the century: Heinrich Mann, Thomas Mann, Robert Musil, Robert Walser, Rainer Maria Rilke, Hermann Hesse, Hugo von Hofmannsthal. Drama at the turn of the century: Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Arthur Schnitzler, Frank Wedekind. Lyric: Hofmannsthal, George, Rilke, Morgenstern. Expressionism: assumptions and basic features; prose: Franz Werfel, Alfred Döblin, Carl Einstein; drama: G. Kaiser, Hasenclever; Lyric: Georg Trakl, Georg Heym, Gottfried Benn, Franz Werfel, Else Lasker-Schüler u.a. The course has been taught in German.
