Annotation -
The goal of this course is to introduce basic principles of computers as well as creation, storage and effective processing of data. During the course, we plan to focus on common mistakes and problems & how to avoid them, including some code examples in Python. Target audience is first year students of bioinformatics.

Course completion requirements -

The course is normally concluded via written test based on the topics covered throughout the course. In the evend of continuous restrictions caused by the covid-19 epidemic outbreak, oral exams with be held instead with options to virtual attendence via videocalls.

  • Low-level number representations, conversions, precision, basic text representations, encoding
  • Selected data formats (CSV, JSON, XML, picture representations, sparse matrices, trained representations & deep learning, common formats in bioinformatics), efficiency
  • Compilers, compiled vs. Interpreted languages, temporal complexity
  • Parallel & distributed computing, concurrency & shared data
