The main task is to get knowledge about climate classifications, overview about characteristics of basic climate zones and types on continents, including knowledge about climate of Czech Republic. Also, students will gain knowledge and skills related to processing of data in climatology. Last update: Holtanová Eva, doc. RNDr., Ph.D. (17.04.2026)

Climate classification methods, basic aspects of the equatorial, tropical and monsoon climates, the subtropical, mid-latitude and subpolar climates, the climate of the Arctic and the Antarctic. The main climatic features of the continents (North, Central, South America, Africa, Asia, Europe), factors controlling the large-scale, regional and local climatic features of the continents: geografical factors, radiative and energy balance, hydrologic cycle, atmospheric and ocean circulation. Spatial distributions of the air temperature and precipitation, solar radiation, sunshine duration, wind, extreme events. Sunshine duration and global radiation at the territtory of the Czech Republic: spatial distributions, annual cycles, variability, extreme values. Spatial distributions of the clear sky days, overcast days, annual cycles. Air temperature: spatial distribution of annual means, January and July means, annual cycle, singularity, extreme values. Thermal continentality of climate, the effects of orography, long-term and short-term variability, trends. Number of days with temperature above a selected threshold, start and length of periods with temperature above a selected threshold. Precipitation: spatial and temporal variability of precipitation, average annual precipitation, annual cycles, effects of continentality, effects of orography, extreme events. List the major global climate regions and their characteristics. Identify the main climatic factors (geographical, radiative, and circulational) influencing the climate of the continents and the Czech Republic. Describe the spatial distribution of basic climatic elements (temperature, precipitation, solar radiation, wind). Explain the principles of various climate classifications, evaluate their advantages and disadvantages, and discuss their potential applications. Interpret the annual and daily cycles of selected climate elements. Clarify the importance of incorporating the temporal variability of climate characteristics when describing and classifying climate. Explain the role of various factors in shaping climate. Compile basic climate characteristics from provided data (climate types, continentality, radiation balance, extremes of climate elements, temporal trends, spatial distribution). Assess quality of data and time series homogeneity. Determine the climate type of a selected region according to selected classification schemes based on observed time series of selected elements.
