Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Define and correctly use key concepts related to mimicry and related phenomena, including resemblance, similarity, crypsis, masquerade, and aposematism.

  2. Explain the conceptual difference between similarity and relatedness, and apply this distinction to biological examples.

  3. Describe the historical development of the concept of mimicry and identify major theoretical frameworks in its interpretation.

  4. Distinguish between and characterize the main types of mimicry, including Batesian, Müllerian, Peckhamian (aggressive) mimicry, and myrmecomorphy.

  5. Explain the mechanisms and ecological functions of crypsis, somatolysis, and related concealment strategies.

  6. Analyze the role of aposematism and pseudoaposematism in predator–prey interactions and evolutionary dynamics.

  7. Compare different forms of mimicry across animals, plants, and fungi, and identify both shared principles and taxon-specific differences.

  8. Interpret and discuss classical examples of mimicry presented in the course literature and lectures.

  9. Evaluate mimicry as an evolutionary strategy in terms of costs, benefits, and constraints.

  10. Demonstrate integrated understanding of mimicry phenomena by providing coherent written explanations during the final written examination.
