The aim of the lecture is to acquaint students with three basic blocks.
The first block deals with the main problems of air pollution on a global, regional and local scales. The second block discusses processes which pollutants in the air undergo from the moment of their entry into the atmosphere to moment of their removal from the atmosphere. The third block is devoted specifically to air protection in the Czech Republic, especially the monitoring of outdoor air quality, collection, processing, presentation and interpretation of measured data and air protection legislation. Learning outcomes of Air Protection Upon completion of the course Air Protection, the student will be able to: Knowledge: - Describe the composition and structure of the Earth's atmosphere. - Explain the principle of the greenhouse effect and its effect on global climate. - Explain the principle of ozone depletion. - Define and characterize regional and local air pollution problems, including smog episodes and acid rain. - Identify the main sources of emissions and air pollutants. - Explain the influence of meteorological factors on air pollution, including atmospheric stability, temperature inversion and atmospheric circulation. - Describe the mechanisms of pollutant removal from the atmosphere, such as wet and dry deposition, chemical transformation and aerosol coagulation. - Characterize the effects of air pollution on human health, vegetation, animals, and materials. - Evaluate the status of air pollution in the Czech Republic and describe the main pollutants monitored. - Summarise the legislative measures for air protection in the Czech Republic. Skills: - Analyse and interpret air pollution data from a variety of sources. - Apply basic methods of measuring air pollution. - Evaluate the impact of air pollution on the environment and human health. Attitudes: - Understand the importance of air protection for sustainable development. - Demonstrate responsibility for air quality and take an active part in its protection. These learning outcomes cover the key areas of the syllabus and provide students with comprehensive knowledge and skills in air protection Last update: Hůnová Iva, doc. RNDr., CSc. (04.03.2025)
