Annotation
Course objectives:

• The student will know the definitions and indicators of population ageing, assess the impact of fertility, mortality and migration changes on the population age structure.

• The student will know how to distinguish chronological, prospective and retrospective ages and relevant indicators.

• The student will know current and forecasted trends in indicators of population ageing in advanced as well as in developing countries.

• The student will know to analyse and comment past, present and future trends of population ageing indicators in Czechia.

• The student will know how to specify features of the elderly population in terms of health status, economic activity, household structure and of housing standard of living.

• The student will know how to analyse the questions related to issues of poverty, social exclusion and ageism towards the elderly and will show knowledge of policies and strategies related to population ageing.

Requirements to the exam

Course requirements for the combined (external) form of study:

A minimum of 70 points out of 100 is required to complete the course. (70-79 pt. = good; 80-89 pt. = very good; 90-100 pt. = excellent). Points will be recorded for the following activities:

• 50 pt. - seminar work

• 40 pt. - final test

• 10 pt. – quiz

Syllabus

Overview of the course topics:

•            Definitions and the use of population ageing indicators and related relevant factors.

•            Current and future trends of population ageing worldwide.

•            Analysis of population ageing in the Czech Republic.

•            Differential features of the elderly population.

•            Seniors' status in society.

•            Policies and strategies addressing population ageing issues.

 

Course attendance organisation for the present (internal) form of study:

• 2(lectures)/1(exercise) hours a week; 3 ECTS credits (equivalent of a full semester of study or work), i.e. about 28 hours of lectures + 14 hours of exercise + 30-40 hours of individual work (1 ECT credit corresponds to 25-30 hours of study time).

• During the exercise hours: topics, prepared by a student in the form of seminar work are presented and discussed. The topics are selected/assigned to the student at the beginning of the semester.

 

Course attendance organisation for the combined (external) form of study:

• 14 practical hours + 86-90 hours of self-study and individual work on selected themes will be published in Moodle (the self-study work will be checked with a quiz 3 times a semester). In addition, one seminar work (on the topic specified at the beginning of the semester) will be prepared over a semester.
