Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

1. Characterize sources of demographic data, population structures, the Lexis diagram, and the basic system of demographic indicators.
2. Calculate mortality, infant and maternal mortality, morbidity, and basic epidemiological indicators, including RR, OR, AR, and PAR.
3. Apply methods of direct and indirect mortality standardization, life table construction, and decomposition of differences in life expectancy.
4. Analyze differences and trends in mortality by age, sex, cause of death, marital status, education, and region.
5. Interpret demographic and epidemiological indicators, life table functions, and results of population health analyses.
6. Assess the suitability of demographic and epidemiological data, indicators, and analytical methods for evaluating mortality, morbidity, and population health.
