Syllabus -

Methods and Forms of Work:

Work in the chemistry laboratory: conducting school chemistry experiments (student and demonstration experiments) to support the teaching of organic chemistry and biochemistry in secondary schools.

Curriculum / Topics:

Organic Chemistry:

  1. Alkanes, Alkenes, Alkynes

    • Preparation and reactions of methane, ethene, and ethyne
    • Sublimation, crystallization, and combustion of naphthalene
  2. Hydrocarbon Derivatives

    • Oxidation of alcohols, distinguishing between ethanol and methanol, acidity of alcohols
    • Reaction of phenols with FeCl₃
    • Detection of carbonyl compounds (Schiff's and Brady's reactions)
    • Strength and comparison of the reactivity of carboxylic acids
    • Sublimation of benzoic acid
    • Preparation and solubility of esters
  3. Plastics

    • Density, solubility, flammability, Beilstein test

Biochemistry:

  1. Carbohydrates

    • Fehling's test, starch detection, Tollens' test, reduction of methylene blue
  2. Lipids

    • Soap making, preparation of moisturizing creams, preparation of facial cream
  3. Peptides and Proteins

    • Preparation of biuret, biuret test, xanthoprotein test
  4. Vitamins and Enzymes

    • Introduction to enzymes: enzyme catalase, effect of pH change on the rate of the catalyzed reaction, enzymatic hydrolysis of starch, detection of vitamin C
  5. Dyes

    • TLC of plant pigments
    • Anthocyanins and carotenoids, beetroot pigments as pH indicators
    • Synthetic dyes, food colorings
