Annotation -
The course for bachelor students of chemistry, biology and geology.

The course is aimed at repeating and consolidation of basic knowledge of students that constitute the base for the individual work in chemikal laboratories. The students will solve the balance problems in compounds, mixtures and solutions and carry out the chemical calculations on the base of chemical equations.

Syllabus -

1. Quantities and units
Major and minor quantities, constants, calculations with the approximate numbers.

2. Composition of mixtures
Relative amount of components, molar and mass fractions, units.

3. Mass balance in solutions
Preparation of solutions (calculations), dilution and mixing of the solutions.

4. Mass balance in chemical reactions
Stoichiometric calculations.

5. Protonation equilibrium
pH , strong and teak acids and bases, buffers.

6. Instrumental determination of concentration
Lambert-Beer law, calibration curve.

7. Saturated solutions and crystallization
Compositions of the saturated solutions, free and interrupted crystallization, solubility product.

8. Biochemical calculation
Differences in calculations in biochemical systems.

Learning outcomes -

Student
- defines quantities, their basic and derived units used in laboratory practice
- converts units
- calculate the composition of substances, mixtures and solutions and the quantities of substances needed for their preparation
- applies the differences between concentrated and dilute solutions in examples
- calculate the quantities and concentrations of substances in chemical processes
- calculate theoretical and percentage yields of reactions
- determine the substance that is used in excess in a reaction
- perform calculations within chemical processes where reactants are used in non-stoichiometric quantities
- calculate the amount of reactants needed based on the given yield
- calculate the pH of aqueous solutions containing strong and weak acids and bases and their mixtures
- apply the Henderson-Haselbach equation to calculate the pH and content of buffered solutions
- calculate examples based on calibration curves in the context of instrumental concentration determination
- calculate the solubility and solubility product of substances
- calculate examples based on limited solubility of substances, precipitation and crystallisation
- calculate examples involving combinations of all the previous points
