This course is a basic course for understanding of the origin, theoretical and practical aspects, analysis and interpretation of infrared and Raman spectra. The course is intended for Master and PhD students.

Requirements to the exam -

The examination is oral and based on written preparation. The scope of examination agrees with sylabus.

Syllabus -

The course is divided into following parts:

1) Energy levels and types of transitions, molecular spectroscopy units, potential energy curves, molecular parameters, selection rules, etc.;

2) Symmetry of molecules, symmetry operations and elements, basic postulates of the group theory, point and space symmetry groups, matrix symmetry presentation, etc.;

3) Infrared and Raman spectroscopy – basic theoretical principles, instrumentation and spectra collection;

4) Vibrational, rotational, vibrational-rotational spectra; rigid rotor, harmonic and anharmonic oscillator, information from vibrational-rotational spectra , etc.;

5)  Polyatomic particles vibrations, normal vibrations, number and types of vibrations, symmetry of vibrations, character tables, representations, vibrational spectra interpretations, characteristic group vibrations;

6) Vibrational spectroscopy of inorganic (from 2 to 7 atoms) and coordination compounds (simple ligands, coordination and symmetry); Fermi resonance, tunnel effect, isotopic effect, etc.

7) Vibrational spectroscopy of crystals, vibrational spectroscopy and allotropy and polymorphism studies, etc.
