Annotation -
The course introduces the phenomenon of parasitic life in its broadest sense - from viruses and bacteria, through fungal organisms and protists, to parasitic helminths and arthropods. This is done from the perspective of human and veterinary medicine, as well as from the ecological (parasitism as a biological phenomenon and its involvement in the relationships between organisms) and zoological (biological) perspectives.
Emphasis is placed on the basic life cycles and strategies of parasitic pathogens, including parasite/pathogen-host and parasite/pathogen-vector relationships. In particular, the most important infectious agents of human and animal diseases are discussed in the systematic part. The course also covers important emerging infectious diseases in Europe and worldwide. After introductory lectures explaining in general terms the phenomenon of parasitism in its broadest sense and the origin of infectious diseases, the systematic part is followed by a taxonomic classification of infectious agents: viruses, bacteria, fungal organisms, parasitic protozoa, parasitic helminths (flukes, tapeworms, nematodes) and arthropods (as both embarrassers and vectors of infectious diseases).
