In the second semester, the course focuses on the topics mentioned above, with an emphasis on the issue of European Ashkenazi communities from the Middle Ages to the 19th Century:
1. The position of Jews in the majority society, 2. Character and structure of the Jewish community, 3. Development of synagogue architecture, 4. Ashkenazi and Sephardic scholarship and its reception in the Czech Lands, 5. Hebrew illuminated manuscripts, Hebrew printing houses, 6. Jewish collectors in the 19th century, 7. The course will provide a basic orientation in the sources of European culture focusing on the influence of Hebrew writing, synagogue rhythm, interpretation of the artistic expression in material Hebrew culture with a focus on the specifics of the Ashkenazi communities.
