Annotation -
The objective of the examination is to test the doctoral student´s ability to comprehend and discuss an academic text related to his/her research in both oral and written forms.

Aim of the course -

1. Knowledge (Remember)

  • Students will be able to remember the specialist terminology relevant to their field of study.
  • Students will be able to list the basic rules of academic writing in English.
  • Students will be able to recall key grammatical structures and vocabulary at the C1 level.

2. Comprehension (Understand)

  • Students will be able to explain the meaning and structure of academic texts in English.
  • Students will be able to describe the main features of the academic genre, including formal style and citations.
  • Students will be able to interpret scholarly articles and correctly integrate them into the broader context of their research.

3. Application (Apply)

  • Students will be able to practically apply the rules of academic writing when creating resumes and scholarly articles.
  • Students will be able to use specialist terminology in both their oral and written presentation of their dissertation project.
  • Students will be able to prepare an academic CV and other scholarly documents in English.

4. Analysis (Analyse)

  • Students will be able to distinguish between different academic genres and their specific features.
  • Students will be able to compare different modes of argumentation in academic texts and identify their strengths and weaknesses.
  • Students will be able to analyse the structure and key ideas of academic texts in English.

5. Evaluation (Evaluate)

  • Students will be able to critically assess the quality of academic texts based on grammatical, stylistic, and content accuracy.
  • Students will be able to evaluate whether an academic article meets the requirements of academic writing and correctly handles sources.
  • Students will be able to assess their own language skills and identify areas for improvement.

6. Creation (Create)

  • Students will be able to create a structured summary of an academic article in English.
  • Students will be able to write an academic text (e.g., a section of their dissertation or a scholarly article) that meets the requirements for formal style and citation.
  • Students will be able to present their dissertation project in English and engage in academic discussion about it.

Requirements to the exam -

 

Students should prepare the following:

1. 100 pages of academic text (approved by the teacher beforehand)

2. A written summary of the text (3-5 pages)

3. Description of their dissertation project (3 pages)

4. CV

Alternatively, the requirements 1 and 2 can be substituted by an academic article written by the student in English either published or prepared for publication in a relevant academic journal.

During the exam, students will discuss the aforementioned materials with the teacher.
