The students will be provided with basic information on history, geography, politics and culture of Russia and Eastern Europe.

Short tests during classes (1 absence is allowed) - 30%

Final paper of 3 000 words on topic approved by the teacher, sent by January 30th to Moodle - 70%

Requirements to the exam

Grade:

Test (30 %) - short test each class (simple, based on reading and presentation from previous week)
Final paper (70 %) - paper of 3 000 words delivered by January 30th. Please, agree the topic with the teacher before Christmas.

A: 100-91 points

B: 90-81 points

C: 80-71 points

D: 70-61 points

E: 60-51 points

F: 50 points and less


Paper structure:
1) introduction
a) clear research question - definition of the topic (why and how I am writing about "it" and what I want to say)
b) short description of sources (why just these sources were selected)
c) sources: at least 4 books and 2 articles
2. Arguments (logic with the use of sources)
3. Conclusion (do I answer the question posed in my introduction?)
4. Footnotes according to The Chicago Manual of style (https://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide/citation-guide-1.html)

Recommendation:
1. Do not take ancient and medieval topics if you do not have previous research experience with the study of old history
2. Select your topic within  
a) region 
b) period (1900-1914, 1914-1918, 1918-1938, 1938-1945, 1945-1989)
c) theme (economic, diplomacy, social structures, mentalities)
d) concept (cultural studies, discourse analysis, intellectual history)
3. Avoid plagiarism!
