War is often popularly referred to as the “second-oldest profession” in the world. Arguably, in any given year in recorded human history, a war occurred somewhere. Given that war is perennial to human existence, the course offers an introduction and a basic orientation in the IR theoretical thinking about war, both in traditional and contemporary times. The course consists of a mix of teaching methods, including lectures led by the professor based on weekly readings, class discussions, and presentations given by the students. Many of the classes will involve extended discussions about the reading materials. Therefore, each of the students is expected to read the required reading and literature and be actively involved in discussions. At the end of the semester, students submit a term paper based on research attached to one of the seminar topics.
