The elective course Exercises in Organic Chemistry builds on the knowledge and skills acquired in Organic Chemistry I and II. This course develops the ability to apply the theoretical knowledge of organic chemistry in solving specific problems and reaction mechanisms. Upon completion of the course, students distinguish and apply the principles of substitution, addition, and elimination reactions in the synthesis of organic compounds; explain the reactivity of carbonyl and carboxyl compounds in the context of nucleophilic and electrophilic reactions; describe the oxidation and reduction reactions and apply them to the design of organic compound synthesis; solve problems related to reactions of organometallic and heterocyclic compounds and their use in synthesis; analyze rearrangement reactions; construct synthetic procedures for the preparation of organic compounds based on given starting materials and desired products. Learning Outcomes Students based on the knowledge and skills acquired: - Identify whether a given reaction involves addition, elimination, substitution, or displacement. - Identify the electrophile/nucleophile/radical in a given reaction - Decide whether the given reaction will proceed and what will be produced - Add an appropriate reagent to a given reaction - Design preparation schemes (including multi-step) for a given compound from a given starting material - Discuss the course of a given reaction using resonance structures, induction and mesomeric effects - Explain the detailed mechanism of the reaction of a given compound with a given reagent, including curved arrows showing electron movements Last update: Vávrová Kateřina, prof.
