Bioinformatics is interdisciplinary field of science dealing with storage, classification, analysis and interpretation of biological data. In the subject Introduction to Applied Bioinformatics students learn about possibilities how to find and use bioinformatic databases and tools. This subject is focused mainly on practical usage and training of various web based programs and software tools. Topics include scientific literature search, databases of protein and nucleotide sequences, sequences comparison and their feature analysis, restriction analysis, primer design, specialized databases, etc.

Bioinformatika je mezioborová disciplína zabývající se ukládáním, tříděním, analýzou a interpretací souborů biologických dat. V rámci předmětu Základy praktické bioinformatiky se studenti dozvědí o možnostech využití dostupných bioinformatických databází a programů. Prakticky se studenti naučí vyhledávat informace a sekvenční data a seznámí se s možnostmi jejich využití. Tento předmět je založen hlavně na praktické práci u počítače a samostatném vyzkoušení různých webových aplikací. Probíraná témata zahrnují: vyhledávání literatury, databáze proteinových a nukleotidových sekvencí, porovnávání sekvencí a analýza jejich vlastností, hledání podobných sekvencí, restrikční analýza, návrh primerů, specializované databáze atd.
