Annotation -
The compulsory course in the 3rd section of study, Economics and Management of Pharmaceutical Practice, introduces students to the general fundamentals of economics, economy, management, marketing, and specifies the issues of their application in the economy and management of healthcare and pharmacy. Emphasis is placed on the economy and management in healthcare institutions, pharmaceutical research, industry, and distribution.

  • Fundamentals of economics and economy (economic systems, principles, and fundamentals)
  • Fundamentals of microeconomics (supply and demand, competition; specifics of imperfect competition in healthcare)
  • Fundamentals of macroeconomics (basic macroeconomic concepts, tax policy)
  • Healthcare as part of the market system (money, financial markets, banking system, monetary systems, monetary policy)
  • Economy and financing of healthcare (healthcare systems, models of care financing, impact of political decisions on healthcare funding)
  • Allocation of financial resources and economic aspects in healthcare (balance between ethical and economic considerations in resource prioritization and distribution, finding a balance between providing quality care and financial sustainability, trends, and future challenges)
  • Fundamentals of management (planning, principles of organizing structure, delegation of responsibility, characteristics of different leadership styles, process of monitoring and performance evaluation)
  • Management in healthcare and pharmacy and its specifics (specifics of management in the healthcare sector, specifics of quality and patient safety management within healthcare and pharmaceutical institutions)
  • Marketing in healthcare and pharmacy (definition and objectives of marketing, marketing mix, regulation of advertising in healthcare, role of marketing in the life cycle of a medicinal product, new trends in healthcare marketing, including the use of new technologies)
  • Selected chapters from pharmaceutical branches (pharmaceutical research and clinical evaluation of medicines, principles of good clinical practice, roles of various stakeholders in pharmaceutical research)

Learning outcomes

   

The course provides students with fundamental economic and managerial knowledge applied to healthcare and pharmaceutical practice. Students will gain an overview of economic systems, market functioning, resource allocation, macroeconomic indicators, and the impact of economic policies on the healthcare sector. They will also become familiar with the principles of healthcare organization management, strategic and project management, quality and patient safety management, healthcare financing, healthcare marketing, and pharmaceutical research. Additionally, the course serves as a foundational knowledge base for the subsequent course in Social Pharmacy, where the acquired information will be further developed and applied.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Define basic economic concepts, microeconomics, and macroeconomics

  • Explain market functioning, supply and demand, and market failures in the context of healthcare

  • Characterize economic policies and their impact on healthcare

  • Analyze the principles of healthcare financing

  • Describe key aspects of decision-making in prioritizing and distributing healthcare resources

  • Compare different leadership styles and their impact within a healthcare organization

  • Analyze strategic management in healthcare and quality management methods

  • Identify major trends and future challenges in healthcare ethics and economics
