The field of drugs, especially the synthetic ones, is rapidly evolving, which is supported by the development of computational chemistry, robotic syntheses and high-throughput screening. The course entitled Current Trends in the Development of Chemical Drugs is an optional subject intended for sttudents of the 3rd and 4th grade, in case of interest also for postgraduate students. The subject acquaints students with new rapidly developing pharmacodynamic groups, posssibly with tools for discovery of new chemical entities such as computer-aided drug design.

The course Current Trends in the Development of Chemical Drugs is associated with the Pharmaceutical Chemistry I and II courses and represents their follow-up continuation. Students are familiarised with new procedures and methods for searching, testing and optimising potential drugs. Approaches to the search for new anti-invasive drugs, i.e., antimicrobial and anticancer agents, are introduced along with the principles of action of the agents and the potential targets of these drugs in organisms. Each year, new drugs approved by the FDA, EMA and SÚKL are added to the topics. Learning outcomes: Students should know the following items based on the knowledge gained: · describe in detail the processes of drug discovery, the rational drug design, including the use of computational methods and the criteria applied in the development of candidate substances · list general alternatives to low molecular-weight drugs · list new approaches in antimicrobial and anticancer therapy and explain their principles, distinguishing between clinically used methods/drugs and experimentally tested principles · define the following therapeutic principles/drugs and give at least five examples: photodynamic therapy, nucleic acid structure therapeutics, covalent drugs and designer drugs Last update: Kučerová Marta, PharmDr., Ph.D. (28.03.2025)
