Medical devices play a very important role in the medical services of hospital system. But these medical devices are also very important in the welfare of the public. Medical devices range from simple bandages to the most complex electronic devices. They are used e.g. for diagnostic purposes, for prevention or therapy of some body disabilities and disesases.
The aim of this subject is to get students acquainted with medical devices that can be obtained in pharmacies and stores of medical supplies. The lectures of this subject inform the students about categorization, difference between medicinal product and medical devices, labeling, prescribing and the ways of obtaining of medical devices. The main aim is to describe all categories of medical devices that can be prescribed and obtained in the pharmacies, e.g. bandages, plasters, devices for incontinent, ostomy and diabetic patients, orthopedic and prosthetic devices, compression stockings and girdles, wheelchairs, hearing aids, glasses and optical devices, respiratory and inhalation devices. The teaching is also oriented at the composition and construction of medical devices, their properties and knowledge of the right way of using the specific medical devices.

The subject Medical Devices provides an overview of medical devices that are part of the assortment of pharmacies or medical device dispensaries. To a lesser extent, it also covers devices used in healthcare facilities. After completing the course, students will be able to define and correctly use the following terms in the appropriate context: medical device, in vitro diagnostic device, accessory for a medical device, generic device group, implantable device, active device, invasive device After completing the course, students will be able to characterize individual groups of medical devices and the products included in them, such as: wound dressings, plasters, bandages, medical devices for compression therapy, medical devices for patients with incontinence, medical devices for ostomy patients, orthopedic footwear and orthopedic-prosthetic aids, medical devices for patients with mobility impairments, (uncategorized aids, hearing aids and aids for the hearing impaired patients, optical aids and compensatory aids for the visually impaired patients) Based on acquired knowledge, students will be able to: • assess the significance of medical devices in diagnosis, prevention, treatment monitoring, therapy, disease alleviation, or compensation for injury or disability • explain the differences between a medical device and a medicinal product and classify medical devices based on risk for the patient according to applicable legislation • identify a medical device and assign it to the appropriate group • explain, using examples, the process of selecting a medical device for a specific disease or disability, propose and justify the selection of a particular medical device • evaluate the possibility of combining medical devices Last update: Svačinová Petra, PharmDr., Ph.D. (17.03.2025)
