Orthopedic emergencies, orthopedic operations, orthopedic infections, acute and chronic osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, bone tuberculosis, degenerative joint diseases, orthopedic tumors, vertebral column diseases, pediatric orthopedics, congenital diseases of the hip, foot deformities, aseptic bone necrosis, congenital lesions of the nervous system, hydrocephalus, cerebrovascular disease, central nervous system infection, craniocerebral injuries. Thoracic injuries. Tumors and trauma and inflammations of lungs and mediastinum. Heart valve surgery. Ischemic heart disease. Congenital heart diseses. Pulmonary embolism. Aim of the course

The aim by study (subject Surgery III): 

1. the student acquires theoretical knowledge of neurosurgery, orthopedics, urology and cardiac surgery and thoracic surgery

2. the student will acquire practical knowledge and skills in neurosurgery, orthopedics, urology and cardiac surgery and thoracic surgery

Requirements to the exam

Credit

  • Each student must be educated in minimal knowledge.
  • A credit will be given on a base of 100% attendance at practical trainings, succeeding in passing a final written test and pre-learning in Moodle.
  • Students must notify the Academic Department of Surgery of an any absence in a timely manner. The head of the department decides how the missed exercise will be replaced.

In the case of repeating a subject, the student is required to complete all academic obligations in their entirety.

Students in exchange programs (Erasmus, etc.) must complete the study obligation in full.

  1. Degenerative diseases of the spine. Spine and spinal cord injuries. Surgical therapy of pain. Trigeminal neuralgia. Hydrocephalus, meningocoele, craniosynostosis. (face to face contact lecture 1 hour + pre-learning Moodle)
  2. Static defects, scolioses. Orthopedic diseases of the foot. Locomotor apparatus congenital defects. Avascular necroses of the bone. (face to face contact lecture 1 hour + pre-learning Moodle)
  3. Intracranial tumors. Pituitary tumors. Surgical treatment of cerebral vascular lesions. Inflammatory affections of central nervous system. (face to face contact lecture 1 hour + pre-learning Moodle)
  4. Acute conditions in orthopaedics. Pseudoarthroses. Soft tissue diseases. Knee soft tissue injuries. Diagnosis and treatment of the most common osteoporotic fractures. (face to face contact lecture 1 hour + pre-learning Moodle)
  5. Degenerative diseases of hip and knee joints. Inflammatory diseases of bones and joints. Tumors of locomotor apparatus. Osteoporotic fractures. (face to face contact lecture 1 hour + pre-learning Moodle)

Themes of the practical trainings

Cardiosurgery and Thoracic surgery

  • I Cardiopulmonary bypass. Heart assist devices. Heart transplantation. Congenital heart diseases. Ischemic heart disease.                                                                                            

  • II Heart valve diseases. Diseases and injuries of thoracic aorta. Pulmonary artery embolism.                                                                                   
  • III Thoracic injuries. Pneumothorax. Tumours and inflammations of lungs and mediastinum.

Urology

  • I Non-oncology urology (pediatric urology, transplantology, urological trauma, andrology, neurourology, non-neurogenic lower urinary tract symptoms, urolithiasis, urinary tract infections, urgent cases in urology).                                                                                        
  • II Uroncology I (non-invasive urothelial bladder cancer, tumors of the upper urinary tract, invasive urothelial bladder cancer, testicular tumours).                                                                                      
  • III Urooncology II (prostate tumors, kidney tumors, penile and retroperitoneum tumors).

Neurosurgery

  • I Intracranial hypertension, brain death. Craniotrauma (concussion, contusion, DAP, EDH, SDH), fractures of the calve and base of the skull. Penetrating brain injury. Inflammatory diseases of the CNS. Hydrocephalus, congenital malformations of the CNS (especially Arnold-Chiari, hernias and craniostenosis).                                                                             

  • II Tumors (extrinsic, intrinsic, pituitary). Cerebrovascular diseases (aneurysms, AVMs, cavernomas, hypertensive ICH, ACI stenosis).                                                                                  
  • III Injury to the spine and spinal cord. Degenerative disease of the spine. Strait syndromes, injuries and tumors of peripheral nerves. Surgical treatment of pain, epilepsy and movement structures.

Orthopedics (unspecified)

 

It is necessary to have: suitable shoes, a clean white coat and a name tag (without this, students can be excluded from the practical lesson)!

Detailed description and division of students into groups (see the schedule board on the ground floor opposite the elevators, Bedrna's pavilion, building No. 21, Dept. of Surgery).

Students will look for a specific teacher according to the schedule at the departments.
