Annotation
History of psychiatry, organization of psychiatric care, classification of mental disorders, symptoms of mental disorders, psychopharmacological treatment, treatment with psychological means and psychotherapy, biological treatment in psychiatry, psychosocial treatment, stigma of mental disorders, legal issues in psychiatry, rights of the mentally ill, acute conditions in psychiatry. Diagnosis and treatment of the most important mental disorders: organic disorders, substance abuse and addiction, schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, affective, anxiety and neurotic disorders, behavior associated with physiological disorders and somatic factors. Basics of child psychiatry.

Aim of the course

The students are able to identify symptoms and syndromes of mental disorders in order to establish a probable diagnosis. The students are able to recognize when a psychiatric examination is necessary. The students have a good knowledge on professional psychiatric terms.

Requirements to the exam

Credit: Attendance and activity in practical training. Work-up of the patient‛s file, multiple choice test.

Practical exam: Write-up of patient‛s history and mental status during the practical classes.

Oral exam: Three questions. List of questions and information are available at the Department of Psychiatry (secretary).

  • Organic mental disorders. Substance dependence. Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders.
  • Mood disorders. Neurotic disorders. Eating disorders and nonorganic sleep disorders.
  • Personality disorders. Mental retardation. Mental disorders in childhood.
  • Treatment in psychiatry.

Entry requirements

The students are able to communicate with a psychiatric patient. They are able to obtain the patient´s history – family history, personal history, treatment history, social history and occupational history. The students are able to perform a basic physical examination of the patient. The students know about individual groups of psychotropic medication, their mechanism of action, indications, contraindications and adverse side effects. The students attended lectures in psychiatry.
